The right travel document depends on your status in Canada. Canadian citizens travel with a Canadian passport, while protected persons and some permanent residents may need a Refugee Travel Document or a Certificate of Identity. Permanent residents outside Canada without a valid PR card may need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return.

Who is this for?

  • Canadian citizens applying for a first passport or a renewal, including for children
  • Protected persons and Convention refugees who need a Refugee Travel Document
  • Permanent residents who cannot obtain a passport from their country of citizenship (Certificate of Identity)
  • Permanent residents outside Canada who need a PRTD to come back

How we can help

  • Identifying the right travel document for your status and travel plans
  • Preparing complete applications, including photos and supporting documents
  • Guidance on guarantor and reference requirements
  • PRTD applications, including your residency obligation
  • Planning around urgent or time-sensitive travel

Good to know: Protected persons should get advice before travelling to their home country or using its passport, as this can put their status at risk.
