The permanent resident (PR) card is your proof of permanent resident status when you return to Canada on a commercial carrier such as a plane, boat, train or bus. Most PR cards are valid for five years and must be renewed or replaced when they expire or are lost.

Who is this for?

  • New permanent residents whose PR card has not arrived
  • Permanent residents whose card is expiring or has expired
  • Permanent residents whose card was lost, stolen or damaged
  • Permanent residents who need to update their card information

How we can help

  • Checking that you meet the residency obligation (730 days in five years)
  • Preparing PR card renewal and replacement applications
  • Updating your name or other details on your card
  • Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) applications if you are outside Canada
  • Advice if you may not meet the residency obligation

Good to know: An expired PR card does not mean you have lost your status, but you must meet the residency obligation to keep it.
